Building Retrofits

Buildings are built for specific needs, and with the technology that's available at the time. Over time, those needs may change. A building might be expanded, remodeled, or remade for any number of reasons. Sometimes a building is adapted for an entirely different use; after all, technology changes quickly. New wiring for computer networks could be added, new air conditioning could be installed, or strengthening may be necessary to protect it during earthquakes. Increasing energy efficiency is another reason. Building codes often mandate retrofits to keep buildings safe.

A retrofit replaces an older system or adds a new one, to update a building or make it able to perform a new function. Building retrofits can be small, or can replace everything except the outer walls. It depends on the needs of the building and its users. Safety is another reason for retrofits. An older building may need structural improvements so that it can remain in use, or retrofitting for seismic purposes could be necessary.

Building Retrofits and Costs
Building retrofits may seem costly, but they can reduce future expenses and save money. Earthquake retrofits protect people and lower the cost of repairs. Causing a building to use less energy will save on operational expenses. Reducing energy use and lowering the impact on the environment can make a building more comfortable, more sustainable, and increase its overall value.

If the needs of a building and its users have changed, or a new technology would make it more efficient and more comfortable, retrofits should be considered. Buildings age just like people, and they, too, can benefit from a facelift. For more about building retrofits, contact The KPA Group at www.thekpagroup.com.
