The KPA Group is a fully integrated multi-disciplinary practice providing Planning, Architectural and Engineering services to private and public sector clients. Founded in 1987* as a Structural Consultancy, the practice expanded and added Architectural Services in 1992 and Aviation Planning Services in 1996.

Principal

Hratch founded the consulting Structural Engineering practice in 1987 and added Architectural services in 1992, to create an integrated practice of Engineers and Architects. Today, The KPA Group is a seamless design and engineering organization that is exceptionally well positioned to serve the needs of Municipal, Academic and Aviation clients. Hratch actively leads the day to day practice and manages many of the firm’s major projects. His creative solutions and exemplary service helped build the reputation that The KPA Group enjoys.

Integrated Architecture and Engineering: Hratch initiated KPA’s integrated Engineering/Architectural approach to renovation and retrofitting projects and has successfully completed more than 50 building retrofits, including: The Oakland Fox Theater; The Rotunda Building; Palace of Fine Arts; Richmond Civic Center; Metropolitan Transportation Center; Caltrans Headquarters Annex I & II and SFSU Administration, Hensill Hall, Burk Hall and Psychiatry Buildings.

Design-Build Project Delivery: In 1992 Hratch expanded The KPA Group’s services into the Design-Build Field. The firm has successfully completed Structural Engineering and/or Architectural services for projects worth a total of over one billion dollars. Major Design-Build projects include: UC President’s Office, Broadway and Dalziel Buildings, Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center, Hyundai Microelectronic Facilities, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Contra Costa County Human Services Building and San Francisco International Airport Secure Connector.

International Experience: Hratch Kouyoumdjian’s personal international experience includes projects in Argentina, Canada, China, Guam, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Consulting Services: Hratch provides ongoing seismic performance assessments, peer reviews, concept studies, tenant support and expert witness testimony and as-needed consulting services to Owners and other professionals for facilities including the following: Transamerica Pyramid, EmeryStation East Laboratories, Thunder Springs Resort, Maritime Academy, Bayer Labs and the Oakland School for The Arts.

Innovations: Hratch developed and tested a new Steel Moment Resisting Connection; this research was published as “High Rotational Capacity Moment Connections” and presented April 1997 at the ASCE/Structural Engineering Institute Structures Congress XV, Portland, Oregon. Extensively published in the field of seismic retrofit, Hratch has also presented papers at several professional conferences.

Education and Registration: Hratch received his Masters of Science in Civil Engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo, and his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Jesuit University-Al-Hikma, Baghdad, Iraq. He is registered in California and 16 other states.

MICHAEL D. SHANUS, Architect, P.E., LEEDAP
Principal

For 20+ years Michael has been a major contributor to the continually evolving aviation industry in the Bay Area. He has led and managed the planning, design and implementation of major expansions, renovations and modernization programs for major airlines and airport facilities. Michael’s unique background and experience make him an ideal planner and manager for complex renovation projects that are part of The KPA Group’s integrated delivery of Architectural and Engineering services.

Michael Shanus joined the firm in 1996 after working for 14 years in the Bay Area in the same field. Michael received his Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 1980.

Aviation Projects: Michael’s continual support of the aviation industry includes programming and planning services, new construction and renovations for 25 airlines and concessionaires at 15 airports, for a construction value exceeding $1.5 billion. Current and recent projects include the renovation of the following San Francisco International Airport projects: Boarding Area E, the new Secure Passenger Connector Building, United Airlines Tenant Improvements, Security Improvements, Baggage Handling Systems, Terminal G Improvements as well as the integration of spaces resulting from the Delta/Northwest merger, the US Airways/America West merger, and Southwest Airlines’ New Station.

Renovations and Expansions: Taking an integrated systems approach, Michael has completed renovation and upgrade projects over the past 15 years with over $750 million in construction value for projects including the following: the Veterans Home in Yountville for the State of California, and VA Medical Facilities in San Francisco and Palo Alto, upgrades of Fire Stations in Palo Alto, and accessibility improvements at the San Francisco State University Parking Facility.

Consulting Services: Michael supports several airlines and airports in their planning activities with concept studies, assessments of future needs and integration of airline operations with airport and ancillary agency requirements.

Registration: Michael is a licensed Architect and Professional Engineer in California.

Affiliations: Community Advocate, Commissioner for the City of Burlingame Parks and Recreation Commission, Director in the Burlingame Youth Baseball Association, and Board of Directors for Foundation for the Fine and Performing Arts for the San Mateo Unified School District.

Awards: Michael was a key designer in an award-winning office building utilizing a unique passive solar design to supplant extensive amounts of electric lighting with daylight. His work has been published internationally and he has lectured at several regional and national conferences on the Integration of daylighting and architecture. Additionally, his award winning projects include: DBIA Excellence Award in the Rehabilitation/Renovation/ Restoration category for the Contra Costa Employment and Human Services Department Renovation, and an AIA Urban Design Award for the Lady Shaw Senior Center in San Francisco.

MATTHEW INADOMI, Architect, LEEDAP
Senior Associate and Vice President

Matthew Inadomi joined The KPA Group in 1997 where he established long-term relationships with the City of Oakland, the City of Palo Alto, Contra Costa County and San Francisco State University. Prior to joining The KPA Group, Matthew was a designer in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Tokyo, Japan. Matthew received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990.

Matthew is an experienced and effective project manager and a strong team builder who has successfully completed many significant renovations and retrofits of public and historic buildings in the Bay Area. Matthew also manages The KPA Group’s resource allocations, budgets and contracts.

Municipal Projects: Among Matthew Inadomi’s recent municipal projects are the following in which he was Project Manager: The Police Administration Building Renovation and the Fremont Pool, Exterior Improvements, both for the City of Oakland. For the City of Palo Alto, he completed the Parks Maintenance Department Renovation; College Terrace Library Seismic Upgrade and Rehabilitation; and improvements of multiple Fire Stations. For Contra Costa County, Matthew completed the Contra Costa Employment and Human Services Department Renovation; Contra Costa County Communications Towers (on multiple sites) and the historic State Theatre Improvements in Martinez. For the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco, Matthew worked on the Ambulatory Care Expansion.

Aviation Projects: Matthew’s recent projects for San Francisco International Airport include the Delta Air Lines/Northwest Airlines Integration project, the new Secure Connector Building, Japan Airlines Tenant Improvements and British Airways Tenant Improvements. At Oakland International Airport, Matthew worked on the Terminal 1 Renovation and Retrofit Evaluation. He completed the Southwest Airlines Enhanced Boarding Implementation for San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose International Airports. At San Jose International Airport, Matthew evaluated the FMC Building in San Jose to accommodate airport programmatic requirements.

Academic Projects: At San Francisco State University, Matthew completed the Mary Park and Mary Ward Dormitories Renovations; Lot 20 Seismic Repairs and Access Modifications and the University Park North Accessibility Improvements. He also worked on multiple projects for the Oakland Military Institute, including at the Oakland Army Base site.

Registration: Matthew is a licensed Architect in California.

Awards: The Contra Costa Employment and Human Services Department Renovation was recognized by the Design Build Institute of America’s Western Pacific Chapter with the Excellence Award in the Rehabilitation/Renovation/Restoration category. This project was Contra Costa County’s first design-build project.
